I've had a problem similar like yours.
It's not related to HP, but to advanced printer settings in windows 2008.
If you check the following site, there are 2 solutions (1 of them I checked, and that works for me, but it could be, that the other solution also speeds up the printing)
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/34099533/server-2008-slow-printing.aspx
Solution 1 as posted there:
launch Print Management
Select a printer
right click, Manage sharing
uncheck the following option: Render print jobs on client computers
(this solution worked for me)
Solution 2:
launch Print Management
Select a printer
right click, printer properties , Advanced, uncheck Enable advanced features.
(I did not check this solution myself)
Another option:
There's also a MS patch for vista and/or windows 2008 which might help too. You can find it here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;951638 or here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952178 (The Print Spooler service consumes a large amount of memory because of unsuitable RPC caching in Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Vista)
Fonts
Another way is to copy the fonts which are used on the client computer, to the server.
(Installing the fonts that the clients are using onto the print server will also resolve this. When the print server renders the documents and the fonts are not available on the server, all the font data is contained in the EMF record from the clients. When the server has the fonts, GDI gets this data from the server rather than the EMF file.)

Nico.
